Elsah, Ill. - Shannon Carney is now officially hired as the new head coach for the women’s tennis team. An All-American while playing at UCLA, Shannon brings with her sound knowledge of the game and impressive experience competing at the top level.
Starting her competitive career rather late by tennis standards (15) she quickly moved up to the top of her region and in 1979 was ranked #11 in the nation. Shannon played for the UCLA tennis team for four years, a team that was nationally ranked #3 in the NCAA Division 1. In her senior year she was offered a full scholarship, and was undefeated in #6 singles, and only lost once to Stanford in #1 doubles. She was also awarded the UCLA College Tennis Coaches Award.
For the last fifteen years, Shannon has been teaching and raising her family. Her daughter Dani Carney is currently a student at Principia College. And though it has been a while since competing, she was ranked a few years back #1 in southern California for her age bracket (30s).
The Athletic Department is thrilled to have Shannon as the new head coach and eager to see her take the team to the next level. They will begin their fall season in just a few short months.
